It has been a while since I wrote anything about wine. The drinking of it hasn’t stopped, although in truth I also haven’t had anything in the last few months that really compelled me to write about it (save for a really good riesling from Alsace that I had a restaurant and wasn’t interested in taking notes on). Anyways, it has been a while, so time to get back to it. Continue reading “2011 Columbia Valley Red Blend”

2012 Côtes du Rhône Red Blend

At a glance:

Country: France

Grape(s): Blend (50% Grenache, 40% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre)
Year: 2012
Maker: Clos des Cazaux

Usually I remember why I picked out a wine – maybe a new grape, an interesting blend, a vacqueras cotes du rhonedifferent region, or a label with a hip looking font (that last one has happened more than I care to admit but sometimes it totally works out). I actually don’t really remember why I got this particular wine, a blend from the Cotes du Rhone region of France. Although I wish I could say it just materialized out of thin air, I probably bought it during a distracted moment at the wine store. These things happen.

We opened up this bottle a few nights back, alongside what has become one of our dinner staples – a cast iron skillet roasted chicken (shout out to Melissa Clark, whose recipe we use – link here). The wine was a little subdued at first, with a  texture that was borderline syrupy, although it certainly wasn’t sweet, just a little more viscous than most wines I’ve had. 2015 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc

At a glance:
Country: New Zealand
Region: Marlborough
Grape(s): Sauvignon Blanc
Year: 2015

My New Zealand knowledge is relatively limited, mostly centered on the fact that it looks beautiful, and that it is the home of the Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement, and also by extension partly responsible for the movie People Places Things that he stars in. I really really liked that movie, and it’s on Netflix, so do yourself a favor and watch it, then report back.

When we were in Oregon this past summer, johan pinot gris.jpg we bought a case of wine, mixing and matching a bunch of stuff. Mostly pinot noirs, not surprisingly, but a few other wines sprinkled in among them, one of them the 2013 pinot gris from Johan. After drinking a bunch of reds (do seem to gravitate towards those in the colder months) I decided it was
time for a change, so we opened this one up.

2012 Coste Della Sesla Nebbiolo

At a glance:

Country: Italy
Region: Coste Della Sesla
Grape(s): Nebbiolo
Year: 2012
Maker: Travaglini

Price: 15.99

A few weeks back, I was at the store, casing the joint for a nebbiolo. I’m cheap, so the Barolos were not happening, and the Barbarescos were off limits too. I walked up and down the aisles a few times, peering closely at the bottles, trying to find a bottle with the name I wanted and a price I could bear. After a few laps, I found one on a bottom shelf, nestled in the shadows – a nebbiolo from the Coste Della Sesla for under $20.
